Oberlin College and Conservatory Bassoon Professor George Sakakeeny demonstrates the opening to The Rite of Spring

George Sakakeeny has appeared as a soloist with orchestras throughout North and South America, Europe, and the Far East. Including engagements in Vienna at the historic Musikverein, at Severance Hall with the Cleveland Orchestra, in Paris with members of the French National Orchestra, and a nationally televised concert in Japan under the baton of Seiji Ozawa. In addition he has appeared as featured soloist with orchestra at two International Double Reed conferences. Peter Schickele’s bassoon concerto, (1998) which was commissioned for him, was the third major work for bassoon that he has premiered. Viennese composer Alexander Blechinger’s bassoon concerto was written for him in 1997, and in 1993 he performed the world premier of Michael Daughertey’s Dead Elvis. A new chamber concerto by Libby Larsen was recently commissioned for him by the Oberlin Conservatory and will be premiered in May of 2013. As a soloist he has recorded Blechinger’s bassoon concerto for the Harmonia Classica label with the Kiev Camerata and his recording of the Schickele and Larsen Concertos will be released in late 2013 by the Oberlin Music label.
In addition to his position of Professor of Bassoon at the Oberlin Conservatory where he was appointed in 1989, Sakakeeny holds the titles "Visiting Professor for Graduate Studies" at Simon Bolivar University in Caracas, Venezuela, and “Guest Professor of the Central Conservatory of Music” of Beijing, China. In the past he held the principal bassoon positions of the New Japan Philharmonic, the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston, the Opera Company of Boston, Boston Musica Viva, the Promusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus and CityMusic Cleveland. He has also served as principal bassoonist of the Grand Teton Music Festival, the New Hampshire Music Festival, the Peninsula Festival, and performed extensively with the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras.
